What Is Skimming?
Skimming is a plastering technique used to create a smooth, even finish on walls and ceilings. A thin layer of finishing plaster is applied over the existing surface, providing a fresh surface ready for decorating.
It can be used to improve tired or uneven plaster, cover imperfections and refresh walls and ceilings without completely removing the existing plasterwork. The result is a clean, smooth finish that provides an ideal base for paint or other decorative finishes.

The duration of a project depends on the size of the area and the complexity of the work. The skimming process does however typically take several hours as we have to allow the plaster to firm up before it can be trowelled up smooth. We provide estimated timelines during our consultation.

Yes, in many cases existing plaster can be re-skimmed to create a fresh, smooth surface without removing all of the original plaster. The existing walls or ceilings need to be sound and suitable for skimming, so we assess the condition of the surface first and carry out any necessary preparation or repairs before applying the new plaster.
In many cases, an existing Artex ceiling can be prepared and skimmed to create a smooth, modern finish. The condition and type of the existing coating will need to be assessed first to determine the appropriate preparation and whether skimming over it is suitable. Where older textured coatings could contain asbestos, appropriate testing may be required before work is disturbed or covered.
