UNDERSTANDING RISING DAMP
What Is Rising Damp?
Rising damp occurs when moisture from the ground travels upwards through porous building materials such as brickwork and mortar. It can affect ground-floor walls, causing damp patches, damaged plaster, peeling wallpaper and deterioration of decorative finishes.
Rising damp is often associated with a missing, damaged or bridged damp-proof course (DPC). However, other moisture problems, including penetrating damp, can produce similar symptoms, so identifying the underlying cause is essential before recommending treatment. P3 Plastering assesses the affected areas and advises on suitable remedial solutions.

WARNING SIGNS OF RISING DAMP
Common Signs of Rising Damp
Persistent damp patches or discolouration near the base of ground-floor walls can indicate moisture rising through the masonry.
Excess moisture can cause wallpaper to lift, paint to blister and decorative finishes to deteriorate, particularly around skirting-board level.
Moisture and salts within affected walls can cause plaster to become powdery, blistered or damaged over time.
White, powdery salt deposits on walls or plaster can be a sign of moisture movement through masonry and may require further investigation.
HOW WE WORK
Our Rising Damp Treatment Process
01
Initial Assessment
We inspect the affected areas, discuss the symptoms and assess possible sources of moisture before recommending any treatment.
02
Identify the Cause
We investigate whether the problem is rising damp or another form of moisture ingress, helping ensure the proposed treatment addresses the underlying cause.
03
Treatment Recommendations
We explain our findings and recommend appropriate remedial work, providing a clear quotation for the proposed treatment.
04
Damp-Proof Course Treatment
Where rising damp is confirmed and a new damp-proof course is appropriate, we can install a suitable damp-proofing treatment to help control moisture movement.
05
Remove Damaged Plaster
Where necessary, affected plaster is carefully removed to address moisture damage and salt contamination before reinstatement.
06
Replastering & Finishing
We carry out suitable replastering and finishing work, helping restore the treated walls ready for decoration once sufficiently dry.
DAMP TREATMENT & REPAIRS
Rising Damp Treatment & Plaster Repairs
Treating rising damp involves more than addressing moisture within the wall. Existing plaster can become damaged or contaminated by salts, meaning appropriate repairs may also be needed to restore the affected surfaces.
At P3 Plastering, we combine specialist damp-proofing training with over 40 years of plastering experience. This allows us to undertake suitable damp treatments and associated plaster repairs, providing a coordinated service from initial assessment through to the finished wall.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Rising Damp FAQs
Have questions about rising damp, damp-proof courses or repairing affected walls? We’ve answered some of the most common questions about identifying rising damp, choosing appropriate treatments and what to expect when arranging damp-proofing work with P3 Plastering.
Common signs include damp patches near the bottom of ground-floor walls, peeling wallpaper, blistering paint, crumbling plaster and white salt deposits. However, these symptoms can also be caused by other moisture problems, so an assessment is important before deciding on treatment.
Rising damp occurs when ground moisture moves upwards through porous masonry. It is commonly associated with a missing, damaged or bridged damp-proof course, although other sources of moisture must be ruled out before rising damp is diagnosed.
We assess the location and pattern of dampness, the condition of the building and potential sources of moisture. Penetrating damp, condensation, plumbing leaks and other defects can produce similar symptoms, so identifying the underlying cause is an important part of recommending suitable treatment.
No. A new damp-proof course is not always necessary. In some cases, an existing damp-proof course may be bridged or another building defect may be responsible for the moisture. We recommend treatment based on the findings of the assessment rather than automatically installing a new damp-proof course.
Plaster affected by prolonged moisture or salt contamination may need to be removed and replaced using a suitable specification. P3 Plastering can undertake associated plaster repairs and finishing work as part of the overall damp treatment.
The time required depends on the extent of the affected area, the treatment needed and whether plaster repairs are included. We’ll explain the proposed work and expected timescale when preparing your quotation. Walls may take considerably longer to dry fully after treatment.
Costs depend on the cause of the damp, the size and condition of the affected area, the treatment required and any associated plaster repairs. We provide quotations based on the work needed for your property.
